Toronto to Montreal

The VIA Rail train journey to Montreal from Toronto takes about five hours. Most of the landscape the route passes through is farmland with the occassional swampy or lake area, and small towns. We stared out of the window for most of the journey and were rewarded with a few good birds. Highlights were totals of six Great Blue Herons, five American Kestrels, three Eastern Meadowlarks, six Red-tailed Hawks, one Pied-billed Grebe and, best of all for us, six huge-looking Turkey Vultures feeding together in a field near the side of the track; a species we didn't expect to see.
