La Crau
A large area east of Arles, bordered by the town of Istres, the N113 and the N568, is a dry, rocky desert known as Plaine de la Crau. We drove down the D5, off the N113, through the village of Entressen and out to le Mas-Chauvet. This whole area is a site for Pin-tailed Sandgrouse but we didn't get to see any (although I did first time I was here in 1991). We did get an Ortolan Bunting, more Crested Larks, two Whinchats, two male Red-backed Shrikes and a Southern Grey Shrike. Also in this area we picked up 14 European Rollers.
