Mont Ventoux
Mont Ventoux
Mont Ventoux is a montaine area north of Avignon and Carpentras in Provence. We parked near the junction of the D974 and the D164 at the base of a ski-lift. The area is rocky with some coniferous trees. This area, on September 1st, was noticeably cooler than in the valley as one would expect from an alpine environment. Although we were there for only one afternoon we got a few alpine birds we were not going to get later on in the lowland Camargue area. On the wires of the ski lift were, to begin with, six Citril Finches, although we saw more later on. We walked up the path adding numerous Black Redstarts and Water Pipits, Northern Wheatear, Common Raven, Common Serin, Coal Tit, Common Crossbill, Eurasian Linnet and European Goldfinch. The walk back added a Rock Bunting, and, just as we were about to leave, a male Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush.
